The Curious

Keeping tabs on Vancouver’s plant-based food and culture

Hey, I'm Jordan, co-founder of Plant Curious 👋🌱

Welcome to the very first Vancouver issue of The Curious.

I’ve spent the last decade eating my way through Vancouver’s plant-based scene, and somehow I still regularly come across things that make me think…

“How did I not know about this?”

And at this point, it's literally my job to know about the best vegan things happening in this city. 😂 There's lots to keep tabs on.

At Plant Curious, our mission is to help Vancouver’s plant-based community survive and thrive. The Curious is one way we’re doing that, by connecting more people who enjoy local plant-based food and culture to all of the fun and delicious things happening around the city.

Alright, let's see what I've got for you in our first edition. 👇👀👇

#Chibop, the vegan-friendly Korean spot in Burnaby

Vegan Bulgogi, Plant-based Tteokbokki and Impossible Meat Mandu Dumplings

This isn’t a place you’re likely to stumble across, so let me put you onto a Certified Plant Curious Hidden Gem™.

Tucked into an unassuming location in Burnaby, #Chibop is a Korean restaurant with a TON of vegan options like bulgogi, tteok-bokki, kimchi stew, japchae, bibimbap, kimbap.

Their vegan bulgogi was easily my favourite. Huge portion, smoky, spicy, deeply flavourful. The tteok-bokki (chewy rice cakes in a sweet-spicy sauce) was right up there too. I’ve only had vegan Korean food twice in my life and both times I’ve LOVED it. I’m hoping to land a Plant Curious deal with #Chibop soon, but either way this place should be on your list.

Brussels Sprout Pizza
Scratch Pizza · Deep Cove

My parents were visiting from Vancouver Island and we were looking for somewhere to eat in Deep Cove. My usual sushi spot was closed and Buddha-Full was sold out of bowls… but luckily, I knew the pizza spot nearby could make some vegan pizzas.

So I gave Scratch Kitchen a call, they helped me veganize a couple, and honestly? They were REALLY good. The standout was the (veganized) Brussels Sprout pizza with onion jam, caramelized sprouts, parsley pesto and toasted walnuts.

Our first chef collab dinner sold out in 24 hours

We threw our first-ever Plant Curious chef dinner with Chef Scott Hardy in North Van, and honestly, we couldn’t believe how quickly it sold out. Every, all-you-can-eat, end-of-summer BBQ ticket gone in one day.

27 Sprouties absolutely demolished a ridiculous amount of food 😂. The 2-hour-smoked BBQ seitan was my fav dish, and ending the night with pineapple rum cake and homemade gelato was insanely good 🤯.

The best part was getting to hang out in real life. Everyone left stuffed, the vibes were awesome, and it definitely made me think: we need to do more of these special plant-based dinners.
